The Waikanae Memorial Gardens playground project was a significant transformation of a large, underdeveloped green space. Originally a grassy, boggy site with poor access and no pathways, the area required full redesigning to make it usable, safe, and welcoming for the local community.

Working in close collaboration with Kapiti Coast District Council, Playground Creations, and local community groups, we were brought into deliver a Play Matta Original safety surfacing solution that not only enhanced the aesthetics of the area but ensured year-round usability.

Solution

The project involved significant on-site adaptations. As landscaping and pathways evolved to improve access and reduce maintenance, we worked directly with council staff, Playground Creations, and our in-house design team to revise surfacing plans, colours and layout.

To accommodate the various types of playground equipment, we supplied multiple shock pad depths to meet safety requirements for different fall heights. Our experienced installer worked alongside our sales manager and the council team to implement layout changes.

Being locally based meant we could quickly supply additional materials, avoiding delays and keeping the project running smoothly. Playground Creations prepared the base to Matta standards and installed pathways and equipment to coordinate with our surfacing plan, making the collaboration smooth and effective.

Outcome

The completed play space at Waikanae Memorial Gardens is a highly functional community area that reflects thoughtful local input and flexible, responsive delivery. The final surfacing pattern adds visual appeal while offering long-term durability and easy maintenance, ensuring the site is ready to be enjoyed for years to come.
