Originally installed in 2010, the Play Matta Original safety surfacing at Burbank Preschool had provided 15 years of active play. After years of daily use, the surface began to show signs of wear and was due for are fresh to maintain both safety and visual appeal.
Solution
To refresh the space in a cost-effective and sustainable way, the existing Play Matta tiles were carefully removed while preserving the original shock pad layer. This underlying layer was reconditioned with a fresh skim coat to restore its impact-absorbing performance.
Once prepped, a new installation of Play Matta Original tiles was completed, reviving the playground’s safety, performance, and aesthetic standards.
Outcome
The refreshed surface now provides a safe, reliable, and visually engaging play space that supports continued use for years to come. By reusing and reconditioning existing materials wherever possible, the project achieved both economic and environmental benefits while continuing to provide a safe, high-performing play environment for the next generation of students.
Testimonial
"I had the opportunity to lead the successful completion of the Play Matta project at Burbank Child Development Center (CDC), where new playground matting was installed to enhance safety and accessibility for the children. From initial planning through final installation, I coordinated closely with vendors, site staff, and facilities to ensure the project stayed on schedule and met all quality standards.
The end result is a durable, visually appealing, and safer play surface that supports active play and meets compliance requirements. I’m proud of the outcome and the positive impact this improvement will have on the students and staff at Burbank CDC." April Clement -OUSD.
