Strathfield Council identified serious safety concerns at Coronation Reserve Playground caused by root intrusion and a deteriorating surface. Over time, tree roots had pushed up sections of the poured-in-place(PiP) surfacing, creating trip hazards and non-compliant areas. Initially, the council considered a complete replacement of the surface but we provided a more sustainable and cost-effective solution.
Solution
Following our commitment to sustainability, we recommended Play Matta Re-Cover as an efficient way to restore safety and compliance without the need for a full replacement.
Our team conducted a detailed inspection, marking out areas of significant root intrusion and preparing a report to assist the council in managing root removal. In consultation with an AQF5-certified arborist, the council safely removed all minor roots and installed a root barrier to prevent future issues.
With the groundwork prepared, we applied Play Matta Re-Cover, retaining 60% of the original poured-in-place surface—significantly reducing waste and preventing unnecessary rubber from ending up in landfills. The new surface not only restored safety compliance but also revitalised the playground’s aesthetic appeal.
Outcome
The project was a success, transforming Coronation Reserve Playground into a safe, inviting space for families while embracing a sustainable approach. Strathfield Council achieved its goal of cost-effective renewal while protecting the environment.
