Konini Primary School’s existing playground surface originally installed over 17 years ago—had deteriorated. The site had been driven over by vehicles over time, causing the base and shockpad layer to subside, creating an uneven and unsafe play environment. With a tight budget and a strong focus on minimising waste, the school needed a cost-effective, sustainable solution that would restore safety while retaining as much of the original material as possible.
Solution:
Work began by Programmed carefully removing the old surface. While the original shockpads were beyond salvage and had to go to landfill, the Play Matta tiles were collected and recycled at our facility in Ōtaki—supporting the school’s and our commitment to waste reduction.
A section of the base was re-compacted to address the subsidence and ensure a stable foundation. We then installed new Play Matta Original tiles in light, mid, and dark green, along with B1 shockpads, providing a durable, low-maintenance solution with improved safety and performance. The refreshed colour scheme helped blend the playground more naturally into its surroundings.
This project demonstrates how Play Matta can help schools deliver quality outcomes—even with limited budgets—while supporting circular practices and long-term performance.
Testimonial:
“Thanks so much to you Tony and your team for the incredible job done on the replacement matting under the playground. It looks and feels incredible and the children had a fantastic time playing there yesterday, immediately after Kris and Steve finished the work. It has brought the playground back to life!
We greatly appreciate the work done and compliment you on how straightforward and easy it was to work with you and the company. Many thanks.” Andrea Scanlan – Principal.
